A program presenting music for  cello "plus one"

Not one but two world premieres in one evening!!

You may have heard the CSO premiere Pierre Jalbert’s Passage last season, and we are overjoyed to present Shimmer and Flow, a duo for artistic directors Ixi Chen and Ted Nelson, commissioned for us by Ann and Harry Santen.

We will also premier Michael Ippolito’s Strange Loops for Violin and Cello, commissioned by concert:nova for artistic directors Stefani and Hiro Matsuo.  Michael returns to Cincinnati where he studied at CCM, and his music returns to concert:nova, where you heard his fourth string quartet at last years’ Art of the Fugue concert.

The theme of cello plus a musical friend is continued in the rest of the program:  jazzy Off Pist by Svante Henryson, Villa-Lobos’ classic Jet Whistle duet, and 21, a spectacular duo for amplified cello and marimba (and some extra instruments for both musicians) by Andy Akiho.  We will be joined by artistic directors Henrik Heide and Michael Culligan, as well as new Principal Clarinet of the CSO Christopher Pell.
