  • The text comes from a play by John Dryden and invokes Alecto, one of the Furies from Greek mythology, whose job was to punish the guilty in the underworld. The idea in the poem is that music is so powerful it can stop even her — make the snakes drop from her head, the whip fall from her hand. The lyrics point to music's ability to heal.

    LYRICS
    Music for a while
    Shall all your cares beguile.
Wond'ring how your pains were eas'd
    And disdaining to be pleas'd
    Till Alecto free the dead
    From their eternal bands,
Till the snakes drop from her head,
And the whip from out her hands.
    Music for a while
    Shall all your cares beguile.

  • Talk about a child dat do love Jesus
    Here’s one, here’s one
Talk about a child dat do love Jesus
    Here’s one, here’s one
In ol’ Satan’s snares I once was fallin’
But I heard the voice of my Lawd callin’

Talk about a child dat do love Jesus
    Here’s one
Talk about a child dat’s been converted
    Here’s one, here’s one
Talk about a child dat’s been converted
    Here’s one, here’s one
Evah since I learned de gospel story
I’ve been walking up de path to glory
Talk about a child dat’s been converted
    Here’s one

  • Dream: by Jean R. Desire, Haitian Poet

Last night in sleep I had a dream
    A beautiful dream
    A grand dream
    A dream
    So much a dream
    It's almost not a dream

    Last night in sleep
    I saw life
    With tears in her eyes
    In a fight
    With General Death
    A red battle
    A bloody battle

    A little breeze blew
    I saw rain falling
    A big rain of words
From which all speech was springing
    And the lightning spirit cracking
    To uproot the lies
And hatch the thunder of truth

    Last night in sleep
    I saw people
    Starting to live as people
    Each one
    Living for everyone

    Then like a miracle
The tears in life's eyes dried
    Death stepped aside
For the open gate to let life pass
And take Liberty by the hand
    To go party
    To go dance

    Last night in sleep
    The party was just great
    Life with her swelling breasts
    Was doling out syrup
Into the mouths of the guests
    A syrup that tasted delicious
    In the mouth of everyone

    Last night in sleep
    I had a dream
    A beautiful dream
    A beautiful dream
