Music + Medicine: Beethoven's Brain

concertnova-beethoven.png

How does our mental health affect our creativity?  As a follow-up to last season’s wildly popular “Your Brain on Music,” our next installment of Music+Medicine explores Ludwig van Beethoven’s mind.  His music can vacillate between extremes: despair vs. triumph, joy vs. sorrow, tranquility vs. agitation - often in the same piece. Is this because of his speculated struggle with bipolar disorder, his humanity, or maybe (probably) a little bit of both?  Neuroradiologist Dr. Lily Wang, psychologist Dr. Maria Espinola, music historian Steven Cahn and c:n musicians Hiro & Stefani Matsuo experiment with the possibilities.

Lily Wang, MBBS, MPH: Neuro-radiologist, Assistant Professor, College of Medicine, University of Cincinnati, Pediatric Radiology, Pediatric Neuroradiology, Adult Neuroradiology
Maria Espinola, PsyD: Clinical Psychologist, Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience
Steven Cahn: Associate Professor at University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music
Stefani Matsuo: Assistant Concertmaster Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra & concert:nova Artistic Director
Hiro Matsuo: Cellist, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra & concert:nova Artistic Director
